New changes bear fruit at CLNN.INFO as we proudly announce the newest feature of the site, our picture gallery.
This newest section of CLNN.INFO features photography and other media by Christopher the Curmudgeony Librarian.
“Photography has long been a hobby of mine, from as far back as high school, but I’ve mostly just dabbled in it,” said Christopher. “I shoot and shoot, but taking that leap and seriously putting my stuff out there has been difficult. Between the editing and presentation, there’s been some discouraging technical hurdles.”
One of the main hurdles for the site was finding an open source image manager. “There are quite a few packages out there but finding one which was robust but also user-friendly was troublesome. Some of the major ones are good, but frankly it was like trying to hook up a jet engine to a lawn mower. Sure I could mow the lawn in 1.4 seconds, but I would probably set my magnificent beard on fire while doing it,” said Christopher.
Inspiration struck with the open source software package Piwigo. Piwigo, formerly known as PhpWebGallery, was first developed by Pierrick Le Gall in 2001. The one person effort has blossomed into a multinational effort with 20 members in Piwigo team, and an additional 40 translators working on the project.
“Plugins, its own uploader, and robust tagging for metadata, this thing is a brilliant. Only downside is, a lot of it’s in bloody French,” said Christopher with a playful wink, “which means a bit of thumbing through the ole French-English dictionary. But, anything worth doing, is worth a bit of effort on my part.”
