Library Bows to Mayoral Censorship, Barrs Speaker

The Ripon Branch of theStockton-San Joaquin County Library in Ripon, California canceled a program from author Irma Slage amid pressure from Ripon Mayor Chuck Winn. According to reports, Mayor Winn told the library director that he would move to cut the library’s funding if the program was not canceled. The Mayor stands by his assertion that this was a not a threat. Others, including Ms. Slage dispute this interpretation, calling the cancellation a clear violation of free speech.

The program in question was a talk by Irma Slage — a self-proclaimed psychic. Ms. Slage has a segment in her program where she claims to speak with the deceased relatives of audience members. Winn received two emails and spoke with six concerned citizens before moving to cancel the program. Irma Slage has previously appeared at the Escalon Branch Library in the Stockton-San Joaquin County Library, apparently without incident.

i THINK THIS IS SILLY MOVE, PEOPLE DO NOT HAVE TO ATTEND IF THEY DON’T BELIEVE IN THIS ABILITY AND I HAVE PERSONALLY HAD A READING FROM IRMA AND THIS IS NOT ANTI-RELIGOUS, I AM A BELIEVER IN GOD AND ALSO THE ABILITIES OF “SOME” TO SPEAK WITH THOSE ON THE OTHER SIDE. THERE IS SOMETHING AFTER DEATH, NO MATTER WHAT BELIF’S YOU HAVE
