Art Dealer Charged In Yale Library Thefts

Art and map dealer E. Forbes Smiley III was charged this week with theft from the Yale University Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. Smiley was charged in New Haven Connecticut Superior Court, with three counts of larceny stemming from his arrest June 8 at the library. The police recovered seven maps from Mr. Smiley’s person, including three from the Beinecke’s collection. The seven maps are valued at approximately $878,000 in total, although from a scholarly point of view the works are considered priceless.

Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library is located in New Haven Connecticut.
